More help for visually challenged

Library Director Denise DiPaolo demonstrates for Mimi how easy it is to use the new visual magnification device at the library.

Denise DiPaolo, the dynamic and dedicated director of the Shelter Island Public Library, recently invited me to a hands-on demonstration of the new Vision Technology video magnification device that has been installed on the lower level of the library.

The device consists of a 22-inch Acer flat screen, a control box and a moveable table below on which the printed material to be enlarged is placed. The user need only select one of the modes on the control box — basically a white-on-black print or a black-on-white — and lock it in. For someone who enjoys being technically inept like me, the enlargement process is a snap.

The video magnifying device was donated by the Smithtown-based Foundation for Sight and Sound; its retail value is $2,200. “This grant was prompted by the success of the Shelter Island Lions Club cosponsored program, ‘Library Resources for People Who Are Visually Impaired,’ which took place in late February, a recent library press announced. Patrons are encouraged to try out the equipment; one-on-one assistance is available upon request. For more information, call the library at 749-0042.

Denise emphasized the enabling role our Lions Club played in securing the grant. In addition, she said the Lions had recently contributed $300 to the large-print book collection.

If you are a visually challenged Islander, the library will enlarge any material for you; it can even be mailed. How’s that for service!
