The Island — up close & personal
A good-sized crowd circulated on the library’s lower level Friday evening — refreshments, conversation and interesting photographic art on every bit of wall space.
The collective donations of almost 40 Island photographers transformed the lower level of the Shelter Island Library on Friday evening into a gallery of familiar — and not so familiar — Island landmarks.
At any given time between 6 and 8 p.m. a crowd of 50 or more enjoyed the free exhibit, the refreshments, and the musical background provided by Linda Betjeman on the electric piano while they bid and outbid each other in the silent auction for the 56 framed or matted photographs on display.
According to Sue Hine, chair of the committee that planned the event and president of the evening’s sponsor, the Shelter Island Friends of the Library, more than $3,500 was raised for the library’s 125th Anniversary Fund, the proceeds of which will help in the renovation of the library’s lower level space
