Academy Award nominee shares spotlight with ‘Prizzi’s Honor
Movies at the Library will end its current season with a bang and a party on Tuesday, June 8. The movie will be “Prizzi’s Honor,” the last of the John Huston mini-festival films and a totally bent black comedy. As a special treat, Shelter Islander Janet Roach, who wrote the screenplay for the movie and was nominated for an Academy Award as a result, will join the party and share some memories and answer questions about the movie, Huston, Hollywood, writing and whatever else moves the cinephiles.
“Prizzi’s Honor” is often described as “The Godfather” gone stark raving mad. It opens at a Mafia wedding (sound familiar?) where Jack Nicholson, a professional hit man, meets and falls in love with a mystery woman (the beautiful Kathleen Turner) who turns out to be full of surprises.
Nicholson and Turner are wonderful in the leads and the cast is loaded with great character actors. Anjelica Huston, the director’s daughter, is especially good as a jilted lover, a role that earned her an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. Overall, the film garnered eight Oscar nominations, including the one for Janet Roach for best screenplay.
This is too good to miss — Huston, Roach and a good party. The proceedings will start at 7 p.m. with some refreshments and a few introductory words, followed by the film and then the discussion with Janet Roach. As always, there also will be bottled water and popcorn, and all for free. (And, oh yes, donations will be happily accepted.)
See you at the movies and at the party!
