Winging into the new year

Our friend Don Bindler sent us this photo of a  hawk at rest.

Don wrote:  “Winter is the best time to see hawks on Shelter Island. With the leaves off the trees, they are easier to spot.

Along with the year-round residents, such as this young red-tailed hawk photographed last week on the Ram Island Causeway, a variety of migrant species spend the winter and patrol our beaches or keep watch at backyard  feeders.”
