The red-headed woodpecker is a rare visitor to Shelter Island.

According to our friend, Don Bindler, who captured the winged-beauties above and below yesterday in Mahsomack, “Three were recorded in Mashomack Preserve on the annual Christmas Bird Count, which took place on New Year’s Eve.  A more southern species, I’m not aware of any   breeding on the Island.”
