The second annual running of the Great Peconic Race Sunday , a 19.5 mile circumnavigation of Shelter Island, was a resounding success, with great competition and camaraderie. Wades Beach, where the race began and ended, was turned into a late summer all-day festival.

The annual shaving cream “fight,” at Camp Adventure — a special program for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Camp Qunipet — ends with the Shelter Island Fire Department hosing down the participants, especially welcome on an August day.
Our photographer Bev Walz captured the moment today when a camper, enamored by firefighter Brian Lechmanski, reached up to spread some shaving cream on the delighted Mr. Lechmanski’s face.

A perfect summer night on the Island was illuminated by one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in memory.
The 58th annual midsummer event, an all-volunteer effort this year, drew a large and ecstatic crowd to Crescent Beach to take in a thunderous and gorgeous display over the bay. (more…)
