Shelter Island’s Memorial Day began with the Lost Sailor ceremony on Bridge Street with the Color Guard and American Legion Auxiliary member Betty Kontje throwing a wreath into the water.
A parade followed in the Center ceremony memorializing all veterans, followed by a barbecue at the American Legion Mitchell Post 281 hosted by the Legion and Lions Club members.

Postponed from Wednesday because of widespread power outages following Superstorm Sandy, the annual Shelter Island Halloween Parade happened Friday afternoon starting at 4 p.m. in the Center, followed by good eats at the fire house and trick-or-treating at all the usual hot spots.

This year’s Shelter Island 5K was run at Crescent Beach Saturday.
Proceeds from the event benefit three organizations that raise money for cancer reasearch.
Chris Koegel of Malverne was the top finisher. Shelter Island’s own Janelle Kraus-Nadeau was the top female finisher.
