BEVERELA WALZ PHOTOS | Hardy (foolish?) souls racing to the water for the 6th annual Turkey Plunge Saturday morning at Crescent Beach.

The 6th annual Friends of the Library Turkey Plunge at Crescent Beach this morning, with all proceeds gong to the library, was once again one of the most joyous events of the season.

With temperatures approaching 60 and no wind, veteran plungers responded with bravado; one participant said, “It’s a day at the beach,” and a local who hails from the other side of the pond compared the morning to “a summer’s day in England.” (more…)

The second annual running of the Great Peconic Race Sunday , a 19.5 mile circumnavigation   of Shelter Island, was a resounding success, with great competition and camaraderie. Wades Beach, where the race began and ended, was turned into a late summer all-day festival.

The annual shaving cream “fight,” at Camp Adventure — a special program for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Camp Qunipet — ends with the Shelter Island Fire Department hosing down the participants, especially welcome on an August day.

Our photographer Bev Walz  captured the moment today when a camper, enamored by firefighter Brian Lechmanski, reached up to spread some shaving cream on the delighted Mr. Lechmanski’s face.
