On Saturday, April 21, at 8 p.m. the greatly admired, 24-year-old American pianist Drew Petersen, who has long-standing ties to the East End as a summer resident of East Hampton, will return to the Island for his third appearance with the Friends of Music. On Saturday, August 12 an evening of Brazilian music performed by Montreux Jazz Festival prize winner and piano improviser Alex Pryrodny teamed with world-class Brazilian guitarist Cesar Garabini will feature a program of “choro” — a musical style that orginated in the 1920s and 1930s and has been described as a “fiery blend” of European classical and popular music with African rhythms. A $25 donation is requested for the 7 p.m. concert at St. Mary’s Parish Hall and a meet-the-artists reception. Proceeds support restoration of the church’s historic bell tower. Performing chamber music is no easy feat.
In an intimate setting with no conductor to guide the musicians, communication between players is vital to give a stellar performance.
That’s the goal of the intense two-week Chamber Music Workshop led by Merry Peckham of the Perlman Music Program. (more…)
