The Shelter Island volleyball teams have been in the gym since August 21, so being in school wasn’t new.

However, they brought a stepped up attitude to the court September 6, the first day of school when the visiting Bishop McGann-Mercy Monarchs arrived. (more…)

Seniors — Olivia Yeaman (5), Julia Labrozzi (15) andNicolette Frasco  (4) —  in the starting lineup slap hands with their supporting cast as they take the court for their final home game.

Excitement was high in the Shelter Island gym on Tuesday, October 18 for the ninth annual “Dig Pink” volleyball match.

The gym was decorated with pink and white balloons donated by the Shelter Island Heights Pharmacy and posters created by each player. Concessions and pink ribbons were sold throughout the matches, all in support of those battling breast cancer. The event raised $515 for the Side-Out Foundation, which funds research into stage-4 cancer, the most advanced form of the disease.

The tension was up a notch as the varsity team, fighting for a playoff berth, faced Port Jefferson. (more…)

The Shelter Island volleyball teams finished up their third consecutive road trip against McGann-Mercy on September 27, then came back home to face league-leading Pierson three days later. The junior varsity and varsity squads continue to show growth and are poised for a strong finish in the last half of the season. (more…)

The girls junior high basketball team has concluded its season in the way it has played all winter — all out until the final buzzer.

Their last home game was on Thursday, March 12 against Bishop McGann-Mercy. The gym there was a flood of green. Mercy had 18 athletes suited up. Shelter Island, with all of its athletes finally healthy, had seven. (more…)
