Incredibly, the girls junior high volleyball team is nearly done with their season.
The team has been improving its skills, and the first game back after the Christmas break was a hard-fought loss against a strong Montauk squad. The match at East Moriches on Monday, January 8, after two snow days, was a difficult one — nothing seemed to go right. (more…)

Despite the lopsided score of 18-0 for the visiting powerhouse Center Moriches Red Devils on March 31, Shelter Island softball is showing growth in multiple areas.
Eighth grade pitcher Lauren Gurney had her first varsity start and even though she was facing players five years older than herself, she showed poise from the pitching rubber (there is no mound in softball). (more…)

In this day and age most volleyball teams have a starting seven, six positional players and a libero who can sub in for any back row player.
That’s exactly the number the Shelter Island varsity volleyball team had on October 8 as they faced the Center Moriches Red Devils.
When you have just seven athletes with one favoring a sore knee, one injures a thumb and one whacks an elbow hard, what do you do? Easy: Keep playing and have faith in one another. (more…)

It’s the time of season where the little changes and improvements of each volleyball player are beginning to add up and manifest themselves in improved confidence and better teamwork.
Several players have also been working out with Coach Jim Theinert to improve their strength and conditioning, and it’s paying off in a big way. (more…)
