The 17th annual Cheryl Hannabury Memorial “Celebration of Life” community cocktail party was held on March 4 at the Ram’s Head Inn.

The gala, an Island tradition, is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Island Gift of Life Foundation which helps families across the East End with uninsured costs incurred during treatment of serious diseases —including travel and lodging expenses for family members when treatment centers are beyond driving range of home.  (more…)

For 13 years, Lydia Martinez Majdišová and her husband, Pepe Martinez, have run STARs Café in the Heights, an Island institution.

With warming soups in the winter, sandwiches in the summer and consistently great coffee every day, their café is an important part of Island life; a place where people gather to catch up, to gossip and to meet new friends.

Lydia’s parents and two siblings live in Slovakia. When Lydia’s parents learned that she would be raising her children, Emma and Sebastian, on an island off the coast of North America, they issued a directive: “Make sure our grandchildren are fluent in Slovak.” (more…)

The following letter was presented to the Reporter this week by Charlotte Hannabury. It was handwritten by her daughter, Cheryl, after the first Gift of Life fundraiser. Cheryl succumbed to cancer in 2002. “My gratitude today is the same as Cheryl expressed after the first Gift of Life Celebration,” Charlotte said.  (more…)
