When the Reporter broke the story two weeks ago that Chase Bank was going to shutter its branch on North Ferry Road in the Center, it seemed like another example of a corporate giant so wedded to its bottom line that it forgot one of the pillars of its existence is not just charging people money but serving them. Just a couple of minutes into his remarks to Chase Bank representatives on the Island this morning, Supervisor Gary Gerth said he was interrupted and told that he had won his case and the officials have reversed the decision to close the branch on North Ferry Road.

Supervisor Gary Gerth will meet with Chase Bank officials next week in an effort to turn around a decision made by the corporate office to close the Shelter Island branch. On Wednesday morning the supervisor said the bank has delayed closing the branch this year, which according to several sources had been slated to close in September.

Apparently the pressure bank officials have heard from Islanders and multiple requests for comments from the Reporter has had an effect.

Whether the supervisor will succeed in stopping the closing remains to be seen. Below is the original online story: (more…)

Soaked flags, their colors gleaming in the gray day, fluttered heavily in the wind and rain on Memorial Day.

The Brownie troop took shelter from the steady downpour in the opened doors of the Center firehouse and the Boy Scouts were under the protection of Chase Bank’s drive-thru across the street.

Both groups stepped off in good order for the Shelter Island Memorial Day parade at precisely 10 a.m. (more…)
