Janalyn Travis-Messer’s office is full of activity. She’s in the middle of building a house on the Island and as she bustles around her office/exhibition space for local artists, she’s keeping one eye on Nushka, her new, not quite perfectly house-trained puppy.

A guy wearing crusty work boots sticks his head in to say that over at the building site for her new house, “The slab is drying.” (more…)

To the Editor:
In all the commotion that goes with front page headlines (“Councilman Shepherd fears future ‘indiscriminate slaughter,” May 12), it may have gotten lost that I told Deer and Tick Committee Chairman Mike Schiebel that they have done a good job, so I’ll repeat that here. The committee’s efforts, along with that of the hunting community, are making a positive difference, in my opinion. (more…)

To the Editor:
Michael Coles’ recent letter (“Time to turn pro,” June 25) was an excellent summary of our tick problem on the Island. Although a Bambi lover, I agree that the situation has not been solved chemically and now calls for an immediate culling of the herd by professional sharpshooters/hunters. (more…)

Time to turn pro
To the Editor:
Peter Reich, in his farewell letter, put it well: “If all five (board members) agreed on everything, we would only need one person up there.” Disagreement is the essence of a democracy, but how the disagreement is expressed is critical; views expressed too strongly can become upsetting and counterproductive.
