Anyone familiar with Shelter Island is always struck by the vibrancy and community spirit that, while always here, is most noticeable on 10K race day. Saturday is expected to bring 2,000 runners and walkers to the Island for the 39th Annual Shelter Island 10K Run/5K Walk with at least that many fans lining the streets to encourage the competitors. It was a red letter day for the Shelter Island School cross country teams as Kal Lewis, 15, and Joshua Green, 17, placed first and second respectively to win the top spots in their hometown 5K race Saturday. (more…)

Shelter Island witnessed a heroic community effort on Saturday, June 17, when individuals, groups, the Police Department and town government worked seamlessly for the common good.
They, along with the crowds of Islanders who showed up on a less-than-perfect summer day to take part in the 10K, and the inspiring athletes of all ages levels and conditions, made it a day to remember. (more…)
