The Shelter Island Historical Society’s Holiday Open House was December 3 in the Havens Barn. In addition to Santa’s Workshop, there were pictures with Santa, holiday gift workshops, an art show featuring work by Shelter Island students, and a sing-along with Island Folk. Among those who visited Santa — and not entirely sure she liked him -— was little Finley Chobor (her parents are Chris and Ashley). (more…)

The 8th annual Turkey Plunge was a blast for all who attended on  Saturday, November 25 at  at Crescent Beach.

For the uninitiated, the Turkey Plunge, a brief, but frigid dip into the waters of the bay, is a Thanksgiving weekend tradition in these parts. Sponsored by Friends of the Shelter Island Library, costumes are highly encouraged while plunging and money raised from entry fees and fundraising efforts benefit library programming all year long. Calling all turkeys … and gorillas and clowns and superheroes! The 8th annual Turkey Plunge is Saturday, November 25 at 11 a.m. sharp at Crescent Beach.

It’s a tradition that began back in 2009 when Peter and Gail Vielbig’s daughter and grandchildren were visiting for Thanksgiving.  (more…)

More than 150 brave (unbalanced?) people of all ages raced into the frigid waters of Peconic Bay Saturday, cheered on by as many friends and family members.

The 7th annual Turkey Plunge, a joyous Island tradition on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving Day weekend, is a benefit for the Friends of the Shelter Island Library. More than $15,000 was raised to fund projects not covered by the library’s budget. (more…)
