Action now on environment
To the Editor:
The front page news story in the October 5 Suffolk Times about local algae blooms seemed quite relevant to Shelter Island in many ways. The map that accompanied the story, showing numerous impacted areas (including perhaps three quarters of our shoreline) made the article even more meaningful. Not shown was Fresh Pond, which has certainly been affected and has received some attention. (more…)

Many Island real estate professionals are bullish about the market on Shelter Island.

But one calls it neither a buyers’ nor sellers’ market, but a “realistic” market. What Melina Wein of M Wein Realty Inc. sees is “a lot of fluid pieces,” not just here, but nationally and internationally, that have many buyers and sellers trying to figure out where the economy is going before they pull the trigger on a transaction. To the Editor:
Mr. James Luke makes a point in his letter re: rising Shelter Island taxes (“Captive,” December 22). The school taxes are up 6.2 percent with a declining student population. The Board of Education has some tough challenges there and I wish them luck. (more…)
