BEVERLEA WALZ PHOTO Steppin’ lively as the annual Shelter Island Halloween Parade kicks off Monday afternoon in the Center.
A perfect autumn afternoon was the special setting for the annual Shelter Island Halloween Parade in the Center Monday. Many veterans of the parade said it was the best attended in years.
Revelers of all ages strutted their stuff and then headed into the firehouse for hotdogs and other treats. Soon it was off to Smith Street and environs for trick or treating and more fun.

Early November is a time of Halloween hangovers, abbreviated afternoons, yard signs screaming for votes and, at least for some, Ishmael’s “damp, drizzly” weariness of the soul.
Around here you can add an important date — the opening day of scallop season. For a string of years of poor harvests, the first Monday in November was a time baymen were right in tune with the “Moby Dick” narrator’s feelings of loss for a way of life that seemed to have ended. (more…)

On Halloween the Shelter Island boys and girls cross country teams traveled to Sunken Meadow State Park for the Section XI State Qualifiers. They came away with a solid second place behind Pierson, narrowly missing the Class D team first place prize by a mere three points.
But one Island racer brought home a championship. (more…)
