Did you ever notice how some things can be so beautiful and at the same time really ugly?

Every winter I feel that way about snow. Not many things are more attractive or more beautiful than the first snowfall. On the flip side, driving home from work on slick, sub-freezing temperature roads, not much could be uglier. (more…)

All for one. The Shelter Island volleyball teams stayed strong and together over the course of his season.

Shelter Island volleyball had a new look in 2017.

We lost seven players to graduation in June, leaving only three returning varsity players. Laura Mayo took over the reins of the junior varsity team from Jim Theinert, a three-year veteran of the position. On the books it looked like a rebuilding year, but the varsity matched its record from 2016, and the JV was stronger than the previous year. (more…)

The November 8 playoff match at Hauppauge High School between Shelter Island School varsity volleyball team and Section IX’s Tuxedo Tornados marked the 13th consecutive year that we moved on to post season play.

With the classification numbers changing this year, the Class D playoffs look a bit different. The Island is now the only Class D volleyball school on Long Island. (more…)
