Shelter Island takes care of its own. These Island groups represent all age groups and address a range of community programs and services, supported largely by volunteer efforts and donations. In addition, each of the Island’s churches provides outreach programs. During this season, please consider helping out or lending a hand — and let us know if we have inadvertently omitted any group.

Once again, this year’s “3 on 3” basketball tournament was a huge success, helping support the nonprofit Joseph J. Theinert Memorial Fund.
This event is just one of several that are hosted throughout the year to fund the Strongpoint Theinert Ranch, which helps veterans and Gold Star families. (more…)

A plunge into the frigid waters of the bay in support of the public library has become a Thanksgiving weekend tradition here. The 8th annual Turkey Plunge is Saturday, November 25 at 11 a.m. sharp at Crescent Beach and costumes are highly encouraged.

SIEF GRANTS CELEBRATION
All Islanders are welcome to join board members of the Shelter Island Educational Foundation (SIEF) and grant recipients at the Grants Celebration on Sunday, November 19 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Shelter Island Library. The event is a chance for students and teachers to talk about opportunities they’ve had in the past to learn outside the classroom through the SIEF grant program. (more…)

BEACH CLEANUP DAY
You can make a difference! Join in the annual international coastal cleanup effort which clears and categorizes the various marine debris found on local beaches. On Saturday, September 16 from 9 to 11 a.m., Mashomack Preserve hosts “Beach Clean Up Day.” Come help prevent sea turtles, seals and birds from being injured by trash while beautifying the coastline.
