TALKING WITH JULES FEIFFER 

Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, author and playwright (and Shelter Island resident) Jules Feiffer will be the special guest at the Shelter Island Library’s 27th annual Book & Author Luncheon on Saturday, June 10. Bay Street Theater’s production of “The Man in the Ceiling,” a world premiere musical with book by Jules Feiffer, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa, and directed by Jeffrey Seller, producer of Hamilton, will run May 30 to June 25. The production stars Jonah Broscow as Jimmy Jibbett, Andrew Lippa (who also composed the music and lyrics for the show) as Uncle Lester, Erin Kommor as Lisi, Brett Gray as Charlie Beemer, Danny Binstock as Father and Nicole Parker as Mother. Guests of the Shelter Island Library Book and Author Luncheon have a huge treat in store. New Island resident Jules Feiffer — world renowned cartoonist, author, playwright and all-around wit — has agreed to speak at the annual event which will be held on June 10 at The Pridwin Hotel.

He and his wife, Joan Holden, also a writer, moved into their house adjacent to Klenawicus Airfield in January and they are pleased with Island life. “It’s a different world, quieter, low key, not revved up. Life here seems old fashioned and civilized.” (more…)

On Tuesday, May 30, Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor opens “The Man in the Ceiling,” a world premiere musical with book by Shelter Islander Jules Feiffer, music and lyrics by Broadway composer Andrew Lippa, and direction by Jeffrey Seller.

Based on a young adult novel by Mr. Feiffer, the musical tells the story of Jimmy Jibbett, a boy who struggles in sports and school, but excels at cartooning. All the adults in his family are less than encouraging about his passion for cartooning, except his Uncle Lester who yearns to be a Broadway composer and understands Jimmy and his dreams.

Recently, Mr. Feiffer sat down at his home for an interview with the Reporter share his thoughts on the play, his work, and his new life on the Island. (more…)
