It was a case of offshore oil drilling deja vu for me, having broken the story about the oil industry seeking to drill in the offshore Atlantic, including off Long Island, nearly 50 years ago.

But this time around, offshore drilling would be completely unnecessary with the U.S. awash in petroleum — $2.50-a-gallon gas — and oil drilling in the sea 10 times more costly than drilling on land. Plus, renewable energy, led by solar and wind, is now well-developed and cheaper than fossil fuels. (more…)

To the Editor:
The Reporter’s editorial is not the half of it (“What was the point?” May 4).

At an earlier Shelter Island League of Women Voters (SILWV) State of the Town luncheon, I led off with one of Governor Mario Cuomo’s favorite stories that he told many times. Boss Murphy stopping in a Catholic Church on the way to Tammany Hall, praying for “wisdom,” “compassion” and “kindness,” concluding, “We’ll steal the rest.”

In front of students and constituents, this display of bigotry against the Irish and condoning of theft and bribery was scandalous — perhaps there should be an independent investigation of the supervisor? (more…)

The Suffolk County Legislature has approved spending $2 million for a long awaited ftness center at Suffolk County Community College’s Northampton campus, which will bring a much-needed indoor pool to the East End.

Legislator Bridget Fleming (D-Sag Harbor), who represents Shelter Island, stressed the importance of supporting the project, which includes an Olympic-size indoor swimming pool. (more…)
