Mary Dwyer believes children are born unfettered by restrictions on what they can achieve.

That’s why Ms. Dwyer wants to bring them into the “2Rs4Fun” program before anyone can impose limits on them.

After 25 years of teaching elementary school, mostly in the East Williston School District, Ms. Dwyer retired to Shelter Island and launched the program designed to inspire young students to read, write and stretch their imaginations. Starting in the fall of 2008, she motivated a group of adult mentors to latch onto her vision and work one-on-one with 3rd and 4th grade students at the Shelter Island Library. (more…)

Shelter Island voters will be asked to provide $22,711 more in taxes over last year to support a $700,339 library budget for 2017 when they cast ballots on Saturday, October 22.

That translates to an additional $4.66 per household  based on a median home assessment of $777,000. (more…)

Renovations at the library began in May.

Originally aiming for a late August completion date, it’s now estimated that construction at the Shelter Island Library, started in the spring, will conclude in early October, according to Library Director Terry Lucas.

Work on a new roof began in May and a new front entrance has been under construction this summer. (more…)

Braving rain and wind last week, intrepid roofers were atop the Shelter Island Library removing old shingles and preparing the building for a new roof, part of renovations by Reich/Eklund Construction. (more…)
