A couple of errors in the October 26 Reporter article sharing the happy news that the town came in with a modest 3.6 percent budget increase for 2018  — the important one to correct being the misstatement that $1 million is in the general fund balance. (more…)

It’s rare that a newspaper’s editorial staff withholds an endorsement from either candidate standing for an election.

But that’s the position the Reporter finds itself in looking at the race for Shelter Island town supervisor between Supervisor Jim Dougherty, a Democrat running for a sixth term, and his challenger, Republican Gary Gerth. (more…)

To the Editor:
The front page news story in the October 5 Suffolk Times about local algae blooms seemed quite relevant to Shelter Island in many ways. The map that accompanied the story, showing numerous impacted areas (including perhaps three quarters of our shoreline) made the article even more meaningful. Not shown was Fresh Pond, which has certainly been affected and has received some attention. (more…)

In what was a mild tune up for a more extensive forum scheduled for Sunday, four candidates seeking election to the Town Board met Tuesday at an event hosted by the Shelter Island Women’s Club. (more…)
