Fifteen lucky birders had a rare treat recently at Mashomack Preserve — an overnight stay at the freshly restored Manor House.

They came to participate in the annual early morning “Birds and Breakfast” program run by naturalists at the preserve, and as they were among the first responders to an invitation issued last fall, got to sleepover night in one of the Manor House’s 10 bedrooms.

2017 CITIZENSHIP AWARD

Each year, the Shelter Island Lions Club bestows its Citizenship Award on an individual (or two) who embodies the spirit of volunteerism in the community. This year’s recipients are Tippi and Al Bevan who run the Shelter Island Food Pantry and deliver food to homebound Islanders through the Meals on Wheels program. Members of the Lions Club will present the award to the Bevans at a dinner on Thursday, May 25 at The Pridwin. Tickets are $45 and are available at the library. (more…)

Danny Peskowitz died at his Penny’s Path home on May 5, 2017, surrounded by loved ones.

Danny moved to the Island in 1998, having summered here for many years. He was a Wednesday afternoon volunteer at Mashomack. Until his last years, he was a late-afternoon regular at Menhaden Lane beach and loved concerts at the Perlman Music Program, his family said. (more…)

Saturday, May 13 was forecast to be a nor’easter, but although the leaden skies promised rain at any moment, the ribbon cutting and dedication of the Laspia Family Trail at Mashomack Preserve was dry, except perhaps for a moist eye or two.

Mike and Susan Laspia retired from their duties as Mashomack Preserve’s director and operations manager, respectively, in the fall of 2016, capping a remarkable career with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) that spanned four decades.  (more…)
