In a stunning sweep, three write-in candidates — who had been sued by the mayor as part of an effort to keep their names off the ballot — unseated three incumbent trustees in the Village of Dering Harbor on Tuesday. Ballots were cast by all but four of the 81 registered voters in the state’s smallest municipality.

The Village of Dering Habor’s reputation as a hotbed of election intrigue got a boost when its mayor, acting as a “citizen objector,” sued the Suffolk County Board of Elections (BOE), the village clerk and the three challengers seeking to unseat incumbent trustees in the upcoming election. (more…)

Village of Dering Harbor Trustee Mary Walker announced her resignation in a letter read by Mayor Tim Hogue at the village Board of Trustees meeting on Feburary 20. Ms. Walker, who has served on the board for many years, cited scheduling conflicts as a reason for giving up her position, the mayor said. The board appointed John Colby to fill the remainder of her term. (more…)
