Officer Anthony Rando (left), Police Chief Jim Read and Shelter Island School Superintendent Christine Finn discussed materials and curriculum at Police Headquarters Monday related to the expanded D.A.R.E. program, which has added sessions for educating students about opioid abuse. The Island’s pilot program is the first in the state to add the special sessions using a curriculum developed by D.A.R.E. America.

When D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) America looked for a Long Island program to launch its student curriculum dealing with opioid abuse, Shelter Island was one of four active units ready to take on the challenge. (more…)

Sometimes things are not what they seem.

For instance, I have been taking courses for 60 years to prepare for the day when I can help someone who has a sudden medical problem. I always wanted to be ready, to be the hero, to save someone’s life. I knew it would be the greatest gift I could ever give. (more…)

Thanks to a collaboration between the Shelter Island Police Department and 5th graders at Shelter Island School, 12 students now know a great deal about responsible behavior and good decision-making.

The students demonstrated their knowledge June 1 for administrators, teachers, parents, town officials and friends at their DARE — Drug Abuse Resistance Education — graduation in the school auditorium. (more…)

Shelter Island Police Officer Anthony Rando has completed a two-week training course in Watkins Glen, New York, and started his stint as the department’s D.A.R.E. officer this month, succeeding Walter Richards, who retired from the force last spring. (more…)
