With so many signs of spring around us and a few summer-like days already here, most of us have probably started to think about our gardens and landscaping. Many early flowering plants have passed their peak and the sound of the lawnmowers have begun to penetrate our peaceful neighborhoods. Since this is the season of ‘things new,’ maybe we want to consider creating something different.
This is the time to break a bit from ordinary patterns and add adventure to our lives — or, at the very least, our landscaping. (more…)

The garden around Tim Purtell’s Shelter Island home is a hopping place. And that’s just the way he likes it.
During the course of a couple of hours spent talking with him about his life, his work on the Green Options Committee and childhood memories of Shelter Island in the 1950s and 1960s, we were interrupted constantly. (more…)
