After that last Rant-A-Palooza at the school auditorium, Codger began to rethink the short-term rental (STR) issue. He had written here that STRs should be allowed if coupled with strict quality of life regulations. A code enforcer would log violations and levy fines.
But after observing the flabby enforcement of the three-minute rule for speeches at the hearing, Codger lost confidence in town officials implementing their own rules. (more…)

Two years ago, when I turned 60, I decided I would kayak around Shelter Island as a personal challenge. With very little training, I set out one morning in a plastic sit-on-top 12-foot boat I’d bought for my wife. Seven hours later I finished and a bucket list item was checked off.
Later that summer I discovered after the running of the first Great Peconic Race (GPR) in 2014 that circumnavigating the Island in a kayak wasn’t exactly an original idea. When I saw the times posted by paddlers, I realized I had a lot of work to do. (more…)
Live Music on the Rock
You know how when you install new shelves and seemingly within minutes, they’re completely full? The same goes for music venues. As soon as a new venue opens up, there are more than enough musicians clamoring for space and new audiences eager to listen to them.
It used to be that the music scene almost completely dried up after Labor Day, but now there are so many open mics that run weekly throughout the year, it’s hard to decide where to go or where to play!
Highlights for me last week included watching vibraphonist Max Feldschuh with the Richard Siegler Group at the Dory and checking out Freddy Cole’s guitarist Randy Napolean with his unique finger-style playing. (more…)
