On a perfect autumn Saturday, Shelter Islanders turned out to cheer on athletes of all ages running and walking in their hometown 5K race — and raise money and awareness in the fight against women’s cancers. (more…)

5K RUN/WALK 

The 18th Annual Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk is Saturday, October 21 at 11 a.m. The race is held in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and supports the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, the Coalition for Women’s Breast Health at Southampton Hospital and Lucia’s Angels.

BEVERLEA WALZ PHOTO | Breast cancer survivor Honore Cavaco of Wading River with her son, John, 9, and daughter, also named Honore, 13, before the start of the Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk Saturday. The Cavaco family were among the almost 600 people registered for the race.

Some were cancer survivors. Others were relatives or friends of those who had either survived or lost their battles to cancer. Still others participated in Saturday’s Shelter Island 5K Run/Walk just because they wanted to do their part to raise money for organizations dedicated to providing services to improve women’s health.

Under a sunny sky, and despite winds whipping the racers at some points along the course, most pronounced it a perfect day for running. (more…)
