Shelter Island High School held its annual commencement ceremony Saturday afternoon as the Class of 2017 received its diplomas.

Olivia Yeaman, who will attend Providence College in the fall, was valedictorian, and Will Garrison, who will attend SUNY Buffalo, was salutatorian.

As our summer of 2015 on Shelter Island heads toward the finish, I think about all the things that happened in that short period of time. If you speak to some local folks working seven days a week, I’m sure you’ll find them happy to see the season end, while the city folks are not nearly so thrilled. (more…)

From Charles and Barbara Olton’s house on the northern tip of Shelter Island, the sweeping view takes in Gardiners Bay to Orient. But when Charles gazes out, he also sees across several centuries.

The 18th century, to be exact, when the British fleet en route to attack New York in 1776, lay becalmed off Hay Beach Point, keeping their horses alive with hay harvested just below his living room windows. (more…)
