One year into her third term as a member of the Shelter Island Board of Education, Elizabeth Melichar submitted her resignation this month and set her sights on a new chapter in her life, joining her son in Phoenix, Arizona. (more…)

Idowu Ogundipe, the business leader of the Shelter Island School, will be leaving for a post nearer his home.

It’s one and done for Shelter Island School District business official Idowu Ogundipe.

Although he hasn’t formally resigned the Shelter Island position, Mr. Ogundipe will be going to the Wyandanch School District, Superintendent Christine Finn confirmed, after one year here. The reason is the new post is nearer to his residence, she said. (more…)

Rain and dampness pushed the Shelter Island graduation inside the gymnasium Saturday.

Keeping with a watery motif of the day, the tears of several graduates moved families, friends and school staff members to standing ovations for both the class valedictorian and salutatorian. (more…)

50 YEARS AGO IN HISTORY

Alabama Governor George Wallace Jr. was shot in Laurel, Maryland, while campaigning as the candidate for the presidency on the American Independent Party line and was paralyzed from the waist down, living out his life in a wheelchair.

“Get Smart” took home an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series and “Mission: Impossible” won for Outstanding Dramatic Series.
