John Reilly, who has used airbnb for short term rentals on his property 15 times this year, spoke before the Town Board Tuesday.

At its Tuesday work session, the Town Board edged closer to writing legislation on short-term rentals.

The board has discussed the issue most of the summer, with some homeowners telling the board they have been offering the rentals to meet expenses, including mortgage and tax payments, in line with a time-honored Island tradition. (more…)

When John Tehan moved to Shelter Island as a child, he was already anchored by four generations of his mother’s family, ties so strong they drew him back no matter how many times he got away.

A charter boat captain, fishing guide and bayman, John is as familiar with the waters of the Florida Keys as Gardiners Bay. He has lived in California, Arizona and Florida, but always seems to wash up on the Island he refers to as “Paradise.” (more…)
