To the Editor:
During my 12 years on the Town Board, I frequently heard the following requests concerning public hearing dates:
•    Don’t hold in the winter because people aren’t around
•    Don’t hold in the spring because full-time residents are busy working 16 hour days getting ready for the summer
•    Don’t hold in the summer — no one wants to spend a beautiful summer evening at a crowded meeting plus there are too many cocktail parties on Friday nights
•    Don’t hold in the fall because baymen can’t go due to scalloping.

That doesn’t leave much time for the board to conduct business! (more…)

With the Shelter Island Bucks season fast approaching, the team still lacks enough housing for the summer of 2015.

Host families provide a player with a room, bed, a place to launder their uniforms and room in the refrigerator for some food. The hosts are not required to provide meals, although many hosts do. With several players arriving with their own vehicles, there’s no need for host families to provide transportation. (more…)

This summer will mark the third year Shelter Island is home to the Bucks, a member of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League. One reason the Bucks are back on the Island again this coming summer is because of the families who host players and make the season possible. (more…)
