“Our story as Christians begins with the refugee story,” Father Charles McCarron said, telling the saga of two adults traveling a great distance where their baby was born, and then soon after fleeing to a foreign country to escape tyranny.
The refugees to whom the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church priest was referring were, of course, Mary and Joseph and their journey to Bethlehem for the birth of the baby Jesus and then their fight into Egypt. (more…)
Not since the Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) roundups in Greenport a decade ago have business owners on Shelter Island and their immigrant employees expressed such nervousness and, in some cases, fear.
That’s according to Sister Margaret Smyth of the North Fork Spanish Apostolate. She and local employers and immigrant employees have termed the present situation “dire.” (more…)

South Ferry notice
To the Editor:
As of today and through the end of April you’ll notice numerous construction vehicles blocking regular access on the eastern lane of Route 114 by our North Haven slips. These vehicles are part of Verizon’s efforts to relocate an existing communications cable in anticipation of Suffolk County’s planned dredging of the area immediately around our slips next winter.
