Cell phones for soldiers, in honor of Veterans Day drop off used cell phones at FIT Center for program that recycles them and provides pre-paid calling cards for soldiers. Open 6 a.m. to noon and 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Students honor veterans
To the Editor:
As well as being the K-12 art teacher at the Shelter Island School, I have the privilege of teaching 6th through 8th graders their state-mandated course on home and careers.
We frequently enjoy many sewing projects, and, of course, the students love to cook. At this time of year, I ask the students to pause their activities and write a thank you note to a veteran. (more…)

Not just platitudes
To the Editor:
Veterans Day has come and gone again this year.
Although there are not many of us left, I am a World War II disabled veteran. I have always appreciated the fact that the nation thinks enough about us that every November 11 we have our own day. Sadly, our local government reserves its appreciation for parades and platitudes. (more…)
