As the Postal Service Long Island District Manager, my commitment to you is professional, reliable and courteous service.

Upon learning about recent mail issues on Shelter Island, I immediately visited both post offices here. I am glad I made the trip. (more…)

If anyone doubts that the economy has improved considerably, just speak with Shelter Island business owners.

With almost no exceptions, Island businesses followed national trends in recovering handsomely from a brutal winter. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 192,000 new jobs were created nationally in March, a sign of optimism kicking off a solid spring and summer.

In an informal survey, the Reporter found that Island business owners had their own way of measuring summer success: Many were so busy they’re relieved to be able to take a breather this fall. (more…)

Happy birthday, Itzhak Perlman! Seventy years young this week, Mr. Perlman will be celebrating with the rest of the wonderful musicians at the Perlman Music Program this coming Saturday.

In 1958, when he was just 13 years old, Itzhak performed in Tel Aviv with several other Israeli musicians for Ed Sullivan, who promptly brought him to the United States and introduced him to the world. He played on the show again six years later, the same year Mr. Sullivan introduced another famous act — from Liverpool! (more…)

Live Music on the Rock

You know how when you install new shelves and seemingly within minutes, they’re completely full? The same goes for music venues. As soon as a new venue opens up, there are more than enough musicians clamoring for space and new audiences eager to listen to them.

It used to be that the music scene almost completely dried up after Labor Day, but now there are so many open mics that run weekly throughout the year, it’s hard to decide where to go or where to play!
Highlights for me last week included watching vibraphonist Max Feldschuh with the Richard Siegler Group at the Dory and checking out Freddy Cole’s guitarist Randy Napolean with his unique finger-style playing. (more…)
