Laura B. Montant


Laura Brown Montant, a longtime resident of Wainscott before moving to Stuart, Florida in 1980, passed away peacefully at her residence at the age of 93 on September 21, 2009. 


Laura, daughter of Frederic Rhinelander Brown and Laura Pelton Hazard Brown grew up in New York City and attended Miss Hewitt’s Classes and the Dalton School. She worked as a writer for such publications as the World Telegram and the Daily News as well as contributing to the East Hampton Star and Southampton Press in the 1970s. She also served as a volunteer nurse at the Bellevue Hospital in her early days. She was a former member of the Bridgehampton Club.


She was predeceased by her husband A. Philippe Montant in 1993.


Survivors include her sister Frederica Lincoln of Wiscasset, Maine, and her two sons Philippe Townsend Montant of Shelter Island and Tilden Hazard Montant of Durham, North Carolina.


Laura was an avid reader and loved the both tennis and golf. Before moving to Stuart she and her husband Phil photographed many local weddings and families on the East End. 


Laura will be interned next to her devoted husband in the garden behind St. Mary’s Church in Stuart, Florida. A memorial in Stuart is planned for the future. Memorial contributions may be made to a Hospice Chapter of your choice.
