Possible burial site prompts police plea

Representatives of the Shinnecock Indian Nation visited police headquarters last Friday, October 2. They reported receiving a recent anonymous letter stating that about two years ago some workers clearing land on Shelter Island had uncovered human remains. According to the letter writer, the discovery was not reported to the authorities at that time.

Shelter Island Police Chief Jim Read said this week that his department is actively investigating the allegation as a possible criminal charge of cemetery desecration. He is asking, however, that the author of the letter come forward with further information to assist the police in its investigation.

Chief Read said the anonymity of the writer will be protected. If, however, the person is reluctant to talk to local police, Chief Read strongly urged the writer to contact the Suffolk County D.A.’s office directly so that appropriate action can be taken.
