40 bowlers start off 2009-10 league season
The Lucky Strikes, captained by Alison Bevilacqua, have joined the ranks of the Ladies Winter Bowling League. From the left, Bevilacqua, Julie Fanelli, Erica Tome, Katherine Leahy-Birch and Melina Wein.
Welcome back ladies. A plethora of treats await you this season. The walls have a fresh coat of paint replacing the dingy dungeon feeling. The alleys have been stripped and revarnished, so make sure you find your new starting points. And yes, the gutters were always blue. Lastly, a new team has joined the ranks. Welcome to the Lucky Strikes.
Nichole Thomas helped kick off the new season as our first Bowler of the Week. Nichole rolled a sweet 130 in her first game, which she repeated in her third. Sandwiched between the two, the high-stepping Rockette hit a high of 163, 44 pins over average. Nicole captured weekly titles of high handicap game for a 217, high handicap series of 585 and high series over average by 66 pins.
First up on the lanes was Odd Ball Lee Oliver who missed two splits in the first game, but still pulled in a 135. Guttersnipe captain Sue Warner went Dutch, alternating strikes and spares. She opened two frames for a 173. The Snipes won the first game by 2 pins. In the second game, Bev Pelletier announced her return to bowling by hitting 3 marks shy of a perfect spare game for 147 and an OB win. Odd Balls started out strong in the third game and were ahead in marks for the first five frames. Sue doubled up on strikes in the fifth and eighth frames and brought the points up for the Snipes for another win.
The Rockettes watched as Spare Us went through several pencils while coloring all their boxes in the first game. Ellie Labrozzi opened three frames for a 154, Cheryl Pensa went for two open frames less than a perfect spare game for a 155, and Sue Klenawicus opened three frames for a 166. Liz Lechmanski teamed up with Sue and Ellie for 134, 146 and 155. Sherri Surozenski and Nichole kicked up their game in the second adding 20 and 30 points to their scores respectively for an ‘Ette victory. Ellie bowled another high game with a 158 in the third game. The Rockettes were behind by the fourth frame but stayed within reach until they passed the Spares by 54 pins for their last win.
The Fabulous Five took on the new girls, the Lucky Strikes. The new ladies needed to establish their averages, but there were just too many of them. Julie Fanelli bowled great in the first game with a 128 for her first time on our lanes. With some well-placed marks Donna Cass hit a 156 for the Fabs, but returning Strikes Katherine Birch and Melina Wein both overshot their averages for another Lucky Strike win. Lucky Captain Alison Bevilacqua and Erica Tome doubled up on strikes and spares for a respectable score. Fab Norma Edwards brought her team out of the gutter with a 137 score for a final win.
The Brick Laying Babes and Paint by Numbers closed out the week. Paint Pam Jackson held her team up for the first game in vain. Reestablishing her average, Lisa Goody opened with a nice 132 and a Babe win. The Babes found it difficult to beat their averages in the last two games even with Lisa’s pick-up of the 5-10 split in the sixth frame of game two and Captain Laura Marcello’s same pick-up in the seventh frame of game three. Paint Pam Jackson had no problems in the second with a 152, nor did Mary Kanarvogel with a poult in the last game for a 111. With that, Paint by Numbers took the last two games.
