Anamarie Austin Breiner

Anamarie Austin Breiner passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on November 26, 2009.

Anamarie was born in New York City, on October 18, 1920 and graduated from St. Joseph’s College for Women in Brooklyn. She was 89.

From 1959 she taught both math and English in New York schools, most recently at Christ the King High School and thereafter at Wantagh High School until her retirement in 1995. She was known for her innovative teaching of math through art and writing. An early computer enthusiast, from about 1970 she trained students of all ages in computer literacy and even programming. Her last big purchase, at age 88, was a new Apple computer.

For 53 years she was a summer resident of Shelter Island where she enjoyed swimming, boating, fishing, and gardening. She was a member of the New York Power Squadron during 1970s, and sometimes taught courses there. In Shelter Island she was active at various times in the Historical Society, was a member of the Garden Club of Shelter Island and the Shelter Island Yacht Club. Anamarie spent her winters in Florida.

She wrote poetry and fiction throughout her life and was a member of the Writers Guild of America.

Still active in her 80s, she took up new interests. Above all she loved volunteering as a greeter at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida for the last seven years. She also began painting (she attended watercolor classes for number of years), and kayaking. She had a great many friends of all ages, her family said, and will be dearly missed.

Predeceased by her husband William L. Breiner, Ann is survived by her children Laurence Breiner, Emory Breiner, and Nanette Lawrenson, her grandchild Courtney Lawrenson, her brother Daniel Murphy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made in her memory to Loggerhead Marinelife Center at marinelife.org or to the Shelter Island Red Cross, P.O. Box 830, Shelter Island, New York, 11964.

Memorial services are planned for Saturday December 5, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Aycock Funeral Home. 1112 Military Trail, Jupiter Fl 33458 561.575.2441.
