Monster Trash Mash
To the Editor:
Three hundred and eighty pounds of trash was collected and disposed of at the Shelter Island Recycling Center as a result of the Trash Mash on Saturday. At the suggestion of Jennifer Ruys, who also arrived on the day of the event with about 10 people to do the cleanup, we awarded prizes for participation: most cans collected, Nell Lowell and gang; most disgusting piece of trash, Keri Ann and Janine Mahoney; and largest piece of trash, Daniel Martin, Jack Boon, Liam Adipietro and Alex Binder.
A team of unsung heros exists and they deserve many thanks: the Town of Shelter Island, the efforts of Superintendent of Highways Mark Ketcham, the Shelter Island Fire Department and Auxiliary and the Police Department, as well as the sponsorship of Shelter Island Sanitation, Inc. and Anderson Plumbing and Heating. We hope to move forward to make this an annual event.
Many, many thanks to all.
