Big news for teens happening at library
Calling all high school readers! The annual “Battle of the Books” competition has recently been expanded into an “Advanced Battle of the Books” for high school students in grades 9 through12, and Jennifer Blume, the Shelter Island Library’s Youth Services librarian, would like very much to field a team for this new contest.
According to Ms. Blume, it will be less formal than the summer contest and consist of only three books (versus the summer’s traditional six). The books that will be discussed are: “Rash,” by Pete Hautman, “Suite Scarlett,” by Maureen Johnson and “Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac,” by Gabrielle Zevin. Practice sessions take place once a week at the library and snacks are served. The actual battle will take place on Friday, March 19 at the Sachem Library in Holbrook. According to Ms. Blume, “It’s a great opportunity to meet teens from all over Suffolk County and it looks great on your resumé, too.” If you’re interested, call 749-0042 to sign up.
For younger readers, Ms. Blume has also announced that there will be a winter reading program called the Reading Olympics. Check with her at the library for all the details. And for those who are too young to read, the ever-popular Story Time with Mollie Numark is back again on Tuesday mornings. Call the library to reserve your spot on the floor.
There are lots of new books for young adults, both in the fiction and non-fiction areas. And remember, if you find a title that you want to read but that is not available on Shelter Island, the staff will be happy to order it up for you from one of the other libraries or even purchase it if need be, so don’t be afraid to ask. And if you’re looking for teen magazines, they have now been moved to the end of the Teen Isle area. Titles include “Seventeen,” “Glamour,” “Transworld Skateboarding” and “Teen Vogue.” Stop by and check them out!
See you at the library!
