Sustainable business
To the Editor:
Recently, while checking out at a store in Riverhead, I was surprised to see that they offered a “credit” for each reusable shopping bag provided by the shopper. What was significant was not so much the five cents/bag deduction, but the recognition by the management regarding the growing environmental issues we all are beginning to realize. Perhaps this was in part a public relations gesture, but nonetheless, it also seemed like one of those symbolic first steps, leading to a new, more sustainable way of doing business, ultimately benefiting all of us.
It seems reasonable to consider if those kinds of changes might also be good for Shelter Island. We all could participate in developing a much ‘greener’ image for our town. All members/components could probably find acceptable ways to participate.
Perhaps it’s time for all of us to consider new ways of “doing business.” For example, there are many ways for funding/leasing solar, sometimes at no “out-of-pocket” expense.
Might we some day soon see solar panels on the ferry offices? The Highway Department barn? The banks ?
How about the school, the library, Youth Center, the Center fire department building, Justice Court?
Almost all of those structures have an excellent south-facing exposure! Are there plans underway for any of those sites ?
Take a look, ask some questions and see who takes the lead.
