Contemporary China stars in ‘The Shower’

Movies at the Library has a mission to present great movies, known and unknown, and some of the best films have been truly little known. Next Tuesday’s film, “The Shower,” is in the “unknown” class, but it is also great.

“The Shower” reflects the tension between modernity and tradition in contemporary China. A yuppie, whose shower business features the most modern of technologies, returns to his hometown thinking, mistakenly, that his father has died. He makes a tentative peace with his estranged father and is reintroduced to the Old World community that thrives in his father’s bathhouse. The New York Times called this film “a sweet but serious comedy, an uplifting variation on the ‘black sheep’ theme.”

“The Shower” has won many awards both in China and worldwide and will win your heart as well. Don’t miss it next Tuesday, March 2 at 7 p.m., at the cinema on the lower level of the library. For those not fully conversant in Mandarin, there are English subtitles along with the free popcorn and bottled water. As always, donations will be gratefully accepted.

See you at the movies.
