Expressway progress tied to aid funds


The Long Island Expressway will be completed to Riverhead in 1967 — if federal and state funds allocated for the work “remain at present levels,” the State Superintendent of Public Works reveals. J. Burch McMorran made the announcement following a recent meeting in Babylon with Robert Moses, chairman of the Long Island State Park Commission, and other highway officials. • MARCH 5, 1960

Record throng cheers alumni hoopsters


Extra, extra, better read all about it … Hardly a spectator could remember when the school’s gym was so packed. Practically every inch of bleacher space was taken, and no one could recall when the school song, “Blue and Gray,” was sung so loud and so well. It was last Thursday during what is to be an annual event — an alumni-faculty-varsity basketball game — when the greats and not-so-greats returned to the once familiar court. • MARCH 7, 1985

Shelter Island subway coming soon


An Island-wide subway system that can bring you from South Ferry, making stops at Mashomack, the Center, the Heights and finally North Ferry, could it be true? Not quite, but in progress at the school is an art project headed by Stephanie Needham, the school’s art teacher, that will recreate an old New York City I.R.T. subway station. • MARCH 2, 2000
