REVERSE MORTGAGES
The Shelter Island Public Library will host a free seminar onreverse mortgages on Tuesday, March 16 at 2 p.m. John Clarke, a19-year veteran in the mortgage industry, will lead the hour-longprogram. He will cover eligibility, benefits, costs, variousoptions and safeguards and will clear up some common misconceptionsabout reverse mortgages. Reservations are suggested; call749-0042.
LIP SYNC RESCHEDULED
The PTSA’s popular Lip Sync show, postponed because of weatherlast week, will take place this Friday, March 5 in the ShelterIsland School auditorium. Faculty, students and parents will allget into the act. Tickets are available at the door and cost $7 foradults, $3 for students. Light refreshments are included.
COMMUNITY STEAK DINNER
It’s that time of year again – the Shelter Island FireDepartment’s popular annual Steak Dinner will be held at theHeights firehouse on Saturday, March 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. The perperson cost is $25, which includes beer, wine or soft drinks. Planahead; there is a limited number of tickets. Take a chance on the50/50 raffle, too.
NEW AT THE YOUTH CENTER
The Youth Center’s new Island Running Club is up and running onTuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. Theclub is open to kids in grades 3 through 12 (and parents arewelcome to run, too). The Retreat, the non-profit domestic violence agency serving theEast End, has announced its second annual juried art show. The showis open to artists who work in photography, painting, 2D, 3D andsculpture (no video art) with size not to exceed 24 by 36 inches.The limit is three entries per artist with an entry fee of $50each; the deadline for submission is March 12. Sag Harbor adventure writer Anthony Brandt will read from hisbook, “The Man Who Ate His Boots, at Canio’s Cultural Caf in SagHarbor on Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m. The book is the intriguingand often harrowing history of the British adventurers who searchedfor the Northwest Passage.
Mr. Brandt is the editor of the National Geographic’s AdventureClassics, the author of several books and a contributor to TheAtlantic, Esquire and other magazines.
