What’s new at Cinema 114

On Wednesday, March 10 we’ll be showing a comedy that I watch every time I find it while channel surfing, even if it is in the middle of the movie. I know much of the dialog by heart and recite it along with the movie. In other words, I am a fan. The film is “Young Frankenstein,” a Mel Brooks film.

In this spoof of all the Frankenstein movies ever made, Mr. Brooks uses the original props from the 1931 version of Mary Shelley’s story, then adds his own monstrously crazy sense of the ridiculous in a spot-on perfect homage to our memories of the classic horror film.

Young Frankenstein, played by Gene Wilder, is summoned by his grandfather’s will to his castle in Transylvania. He is met by Igor, a hunchbacked assistant played by bug-eyed Marty Feldman and introduced to Inga, his curvaceous lab assistant played by Teri Garr. The new monster (Peter Boyle), who only wants to be loved, is soon created from grandfather’s notes. Cloris Leachman is the perfect housekeeper for the castle and Madeline Kahn lends her own perfect comic flair as Professor Frankenstein’s fiancée. The lunacy continues all out with the able help of Kenneth Mars and Gene Hackman.

The second film this month is the Oscar winner for best picture of 1988, “Rain Man.” It won three other Oscars and is not to be missed. On Wednesday, March 24 at 2:30 p.m., come see this funny, heartbreaking and yet tender story of a young go-getter named Charlie Babbit (Tom Cruise) who discovers that he has an autistic brother in an institution. The brother, Raymond, played by Dustin Hoffman, has inherited the bulk of the family’s estate just when his car salesman brother is in dire need of cash for cars coming in from overseas in a few days. The two brothers begin a journey that tries their patience as they learn to function together.

Raymond has many rules to help him cope with his life; he cannot manage with any changes in his routine. Charlie wants to get custody of him and the trust fund so he must learn to deal with Raymond. At times, the situations are hilarious and then they make you cry. The roller coaster ride is great theater.
