FROM THE DESK OF KARIN BENNETT

‘GOING GREEN, FIND ME FAST’

This is the name of a new program sponsored by the Shelter Island Fire Department. The objective is to provide a highly visible house address number to aid all Shelter Island emergency services in responding to homeowner calls for assistance.

The house number sign is an attractive green metal sign with reflective white numbers. They will be placed at the end of driveways at a height easily seen during the day or by headlights at night. A few homes have them; watch for the signs on mailbox posts and trees.

This service is being provided free of charge to residents who are 60 or over. To arrange having a sign installed, call Barbara Bloom or Karin Bennett at 749-0291. Many thanks to the Fire Department for facilitating this program!

U.S. CENSUS

The 2010 U.S. Census is underway. When a census taker comes to your door, ask to see a photo ID and a badge that shows the person represents the U.S. Census Bureau. The person will also have a canvas census bag, a hand-held device to take down information and a confidentiality notice. Census workers will not ask for your Social Security number, bank account or credit card numbers. The 2010 form asks only 10 questions and will take about 10 minutes to complete.

Giving accurate information helps our state anticipate and prepare for the future trends and needs of local communities. Thank you for your help with the census.

RIDES FOR SENIORS

Free rides for seniors on Shelter Island for medical appointments and shopping are still available provided by the Shelter Island Go-fers taxi. The AAA transportation grant, funded by the New York State Office for the Aging and the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, will be in effect through March 31, 2010. Call Dana at 749-1059 to arrange any transportation needs.
