Young playwright debuts

on stage at avram theatre

“Deer Jane,” a one-act play by middle school student, Tommy Card, will be performed on Saturday night, March 20 at 7 p.m. on the Avram Theatre stage at Stony Brook Southampton. His play is one of six that will be showcased, representing middle schools in the Young American Writers Project, sponsored by Stony Brook’s M.F.A. in writing and literature program.

About 200 students participated in the playwriting program, conducted over two months this winter. After exploring the basic elements of dramatic writing, each student wrote a 10-minute play, and one play from each school was then selected for this weekend’s program.

Tommy’s comedy is directed by local playwright John Kaasik and stars 7th grader Felicity Williams as Jane Doe and 8th grader Drew Garrison as Stuck Buck. Tommy’s classmate Leila Mulligan is the assistant director. Middle school teacher, Logan Kingston, said the Stony Brook staff had a difficult time choosing just one play from the Shelter Island school and honorable mentions for their work also went to Olivia Garrison, Inga Cordts and Felicity Williams. According to Ms. Kingston, the teaching artists who worked with Shelter Island said that “out of all the schools that participated in the project this year, [Shelter Island] had the best plays.” Quite an achievement for a class of only 15 kids.
