MASHOMACK’S ‘BIG HOUSE’
Take a truck tour and a short hike with Mashomack Preserve Director Mike Laspia on Saturday, March 20 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants will discover the history of Mashomack’s meadows and find the foundations of buildings in Miss Annie Nicoll’s “Big House” area. Call 749-1001 to reserve a place. The tour is free for members of the Nature Conservancy, $4 for non-members.
AN EVENING OF THEATRE
The Presbyterian Church is hosting a dinner and an “Evening of Theatre Pieces” in Fellowship Hall on Saturday, March 27. David Raffelock will read from Samuel Beckett’s one-act play,“Krapp’s Last Tape”; Forrest Compton will entertain with a special reading; and Pastor Bill Grimbol will perform “A Laugh and a Lament,” a piece he wrote.
A roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be served up by the Kaasik families, Jeanette Payne and Debbie Raffelock. (You can bring your own wine.) All that and a 50/50 raffle, too. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 per person; sign up in Fellowship Hall or call the church office at 749-0805.
SIEF GRANTS AVAILABLE
Applications are now available for institutional and individual grants sponsored by the Shelter Island Educational Foundation. Parents, members of the community, school staff and teachers and students are all eligible to submit proposals. They can be picked up at the school’s main office or at the Shelter Island Public Library and are online at shelterislandedfoundation.org. The deadline for submitting applications is Saturday, April 10.
BOOKS, BABIES, SONGS…
Join Dara Linthwaite and her guitar for “Windsong” — song-related fun, finger play and a story — at the Shelter Island Library on Friday, March 19 at 10:30 a.m. The popular program, funded by a grant from Target, is part of the series, “Books, Babies, Songs & Rhymes,” designed for ages 3 and under.
WINDOWS FOR BEGINNERS
The Shelter Island Library will host a free Windows for Beginners computer class for adults on Tuesday, March 23 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Instructor Mark Lindermann teaches this open-ended course once a month. Call 749-0042 to reserve a space.
ON THE TEEN ISLE
“Twilight Saga: New Moon,” a Movies & Munchies selection for grades 6 to 12, will play at the Shelter Island Library on Saturday, March 20 at 1 p.m. The film, rated PG-13, is a romantic fantasy and the second in the “Twilight Saga” series. It features vampires, shape-shifters and covens, and stars Kristen Steward, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson.

SIGN UP FOR ‘TEAM WILD’
The Group for the East End and the Wildlife Rescue Center are sponsoring a special training session in Southold on Saturday, March 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon for those who would like to become members of “Team Wild.” Participants (10 years old and up) will hear about the work of a wildlife rehabilitator and meet some local wildlife species. Everyone who attends will receive a certificate and will learn to recognize and rescue injured animals. Islander John Kneeland’s band, The Realm, will be playing at the Bay Street Theatre on Long Wharf in Sag Harbor this Saturday, March 20. “Spring Fling,” sponsored by the Sag Harbor “Hysterical” Society, will feature four bands in concert, starting at 8 p.m. The bar opens at 7 p.m. General admission tickets cost $25 per person and can be purchased at the door. SATURDAY STARGAZING
Weather permitting, the Custer Institute in Southold will host guided tours of the night sky through its powerful telescopes on Saturday, March 20 from 7 p.m. to midnight. AT CANIO’S CULTURAL CAFE…
Canio’s Café will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 20 at 6 p.m. with singer/historian Terry Sullivan.
A student of Irish history and language, he will explain the historical context of the songs he will sing — several of them in Gaelic. “The trouble with Irish history,” he says, “is that there’s too much of it.” Mr. Sullivan has performed with a number of well-known folk musicians, among them Pete Seeger. There is no admission charge but a free-will donation will be requested.
AARP DRIVER SAFETY
If you missed this at the Shelter Island Library, sign up for the Driver Safety Program at the Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. The 8-hour course will be held on Thursday and Friday, March 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is especially designed for drivers age 50 and over. Completion of the course can result in car insurance discounts. The cost is $12 for Greenport Library members, $14 for non-members. For more information, call 477-0660.
