Kanarvogels earn citizenship award

Mary and Mark Kanarvogel are this year’s recipients of the Lions Club citizenship award.

The Shelter Island Lions Club has selected Mark and Mary Kanarvogel as recipients of the club’s annual citizenship award for 2010.

“Many Island residents are quite familiar with the extensive and caring work that the Kanarvogels do for the Shelter Island community,” said Alan Kraus, Lions Club secretary in a press release dated April 16. “Mary and Mark give freely of their time and energy to encourage children, youth, parents and senior citizens.”

Both have assisted Island families through a Lions Club program to provide heat and groceries to those in need during the winter season, according to Mr. Kraus. “Community health is their primary dedication — Mary as the Shelter Island School nurse and Mark as a member of the Shelter Island Ambulance Corps.”

The Shelter Island community is invited to celebrate with the Kanarvogels as they receive their award on Sunday, May 23 at the Pridwin. Reservation information will be released soon.
